What are the stages of supporting Trump? Their feelings may happen in phases as they realize his actions are indefensible, yet double-down on their support of him for no good reason. People who continue to support Trump do not necessarily go through the stages in the same order as they’re attempting to defend him on Twitter at 1 a.m. or over Christmas dinner at Aunt Betty’s house after too many beers.
#1 – DISAVOWAL.
Total, absolute disavowal of what is happening is the foundation of the process. It helps them to avoid the actual facts.
“It’s a total lie, never happened, fake news!”
#2 – DISMISSAL.
Dismissal is a necessary stage of Trump supporter denial. This is just another indication of the intensity of their willingness to ignore the truth.
“So what if it happened? It’s not a big deal! A Nothing Burger!”
#3 – BARGAINING.
Bargaining is an integral part of supporters acknowledging Trump is a dangerous moron, but that they value their blind faith in him over the well-being of the country.
“Okay, it might be a big deal, but it isn’t illegal! So who cares.”
#4 – DEFLECTION.
This stage was pioneered by Fox News: no matter how terrible Trump’s actions may be (e.g., supporting Nazis, mocking disabled reporters, assaulting women, colluding with Russians), be sure to project it onto the Clintons or President Obama somehow.
“Okay, it’s illegal, but Crooked Hillary and Obummer did ‘whatever, whatever,’ so it doesn’t matter.”
#5 – MATURE ACCEPTANCE.
Acceptance is often confused with the notion of admitting that supporting Trump was a mistake or yielding certain points. This is not the case.
“Get over it, libtard, you’re just a sore loser!”
